Entrance Requirements

Any adult 18 years of age and older who does not have a high school diploma and/or scores below 12.9 in reading, math, or language, or is not proficient in the English language, can attend the Conway Adult Education Center.  The student must have a valid State Issued Photo ID or a valid Arkansas Drivers License for GED testing.  This is an open entry/open exit program.  Summer schedules may vary.

UNDER 18 REQUIREMENTS

If the student is under the age of 18, that is 16 or 17 years old, the requirements are as follows:

ALL U18s must schedule an appointment to take the assessment after arranging a referral from the public school they attend in Faulkner County.  To arrange an appointment, call the Center and speak to Michelle Horton or Donna Burnett.  If the student is home schooled, the student must have the current fiscal year original copy of the intent to home school with the school seal.

ALL U18s must arrive by 8:20 a.m. the day of the assessment.  They must also bring a parent/guardian with them the day of the assessment.  The parent/guardian must plan to stay for the orientation.  If the under 18 year old is not accepted, he/she must return to public school.

ALL U18s, once they are accepted into the Adult Education Program, must attend a minimum of 20 hours a week of classroom instruction; 10 hours if the student has proof of a 30 hour a week job.  (Except for home schooled or court ordered students.)

Home-schooled students do not have to enroll in adult education.  They must complete and pass the GED Pre-Tests before scheduling the official GED exam.  The student, if under 18, must have a minimum of 460 on each Pre-Test and an overall average of 490 before the official exam can be scheduled.

The student must score a 9th grade level or above in each subject of the assessment.  If they do not, they MUST return to their  respective public school or, if home schooled, students must  return home for further study and may return in 30 days to re-assess.  The assessment may only be attempted 3 times in a school calendar year.  (This includes reschedules)  Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If the student passes the assessment, the student will begin taking the GED Pre-Tests.  The student must score at least a 460 in each subject and have an average of 490 or better.

If all requirements have been met, and the student has withdrawn from the public school, the student will then be scheduled to begin the official GED exam.  This is given at scheduled times and takes approximately 11 hours to complete the exam.

The student must have an ARKANSAS STATE issued photo ID or a valid Arkansas Drivers License in order to be allowed to take the official GED exam.  If the student arrives to take the official exam and does not have the official ID, the student will be rescheduled to take the exam at a later date.

The official exam is scored in Texas.  Results are usually available within 21 working days.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY

Students may attend the adult education program to obtain ½ credit ONLY (60 classroom hours). Students must go to their Principal and obtain a letter stating that they are ½ credit short and state in what subject area.  (They must also provide a copy of their transcript).  This can only be obtained if the high school student has already graduated with his/her class.  The number that is allowed in the program is the maximum of 10 per year.  Students needing this help must then visit the center and talk to the Director and/or the Attendance Officer about starting thisprogram.  The student will be given a deadline for completion and must do so by the given date or forfeit all accumulated hours.

The student will be given only one chance at this opportunity.

THIS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THEIR 21st BIRTHDAY.

Upon starting this program, student will be given the T.A.B.E. educational assessment.  Classes will be assigned.

Upon completion of the 60 hours, the student must then take the GED Pre-Test and pass it.  The student must also make academic progress in other areas if needed.

A letter that states that the student has attended 60 hours and has passed the Pre-Test is issued to the student.  The student takes the letter to his/her high school. Adult Education does not give high school credits.
